Are You in Danger of Mold?

If you have noticed that your home is becoming increasingly humid, you may have a problem with mold. While it’s difficult to notice when it’s present, mold spores thrive in warm, moist locations. In addition to basements, areas with excessive moisture, such as showers, can also be breeding grounds for mold spores. It’s important to keep these areas well-ventilated and dry.

Are You in Danger of Mold?

Different types of mold can cause varying levels of health problems in different people. Some people will experience a stuffy nose, runny nose, sore throat, and wheezing, while others may develop more severe symptoms. For those with allergies, mold exposure can lead to severe symptoms like swelling of the lungs, wheezing, and shortness of breath. More serious health problems can also result from prolonged exposure, such as respiratory failure, bronchitis, asthma, and even death.

A good place to look for signs of mold is under your sink or bathroom. If you have any of these symptoms, consult a medical professional for mold inspections as soon as possible. In addition to the air in the bathroom or basement, mold spores can also be found on drywall, ceiling tiles, carpets, upholstery, furniture, electrical cables, canvas, and other textiles. These spores can be harmful to humans, so it’s important to get rid of them immediately.

The easiest way to prevent mold in your home is to make sure that your indoor humidity is at or near 40%. Keep your kitchen and bathroom appliances off of damp areas, and turn on your exhaust fans while cooking and cleaning. In addition, if you notice any visible mold, you should use soap and water mist to clean the area. While using bleach, make sure not to mix ammonia or bleach, as these two chemicals can cause toxic fumes.
